Ranch Reflections are articles written by LRHS students and staff who want to share their experiences, thoughts, and concerns. This is a great opportunity for Mustangs to branch out beyond traditional news stories.  In this edition "Mustangs Ahead"'s senior editor discusses her years on staff.

Cleo Drapak— Mustangs Ahead Senior Editor

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)— Being the Senior Editor for “Mustangs Ahead” gave me a new perspective on the importance of creativity, responsibility, and teamwork that I will carry with me long after graduation.

The Lakewood Ranch High School (LRHS) journalism program has been one of the most consistent and meaningful parts of my high school experience. Through writing, editing, and collaborating with my peers, I not only developed my skills as a journalist but also found a strong sense of community and purpose.

Starting in Journalism 1 freshman year, I was drawn to journalism originally as a nonserious period that I could practice writing in, but it quickly became much more than that. It taught me how to meet deadlines, take accountability for my work, and communicate effectively with others. As I grew within the program, stepping into the role of Junior Associate, then Senior, Editor challenged me to lead, mentor, and help shape the publication as a whole in order to reach our goal of 100,000 views across all social media platforms.

“Mustangs Ahead” motivated me to improve my drive to be an active participant within the LRHS community in order to become an active contributor to the program’s growth. Over time, “Mustangs Ahead” became a central part of my education, pushing me to show up and stay engaged even when facing challenges outside of school. “Mustangs Ahead” encouraged me to become more allocentric, shifting my focus outward and strengthening my sense of purpose and motivation.

One of the most rewarding aspects of this experience has been working alongside such a dedicated and talented team of both staff and leadership. Whether we were brainstorming story ideas, grading countless stories, and dealing with the complications of Thrillshare and Outlook, those moments created memories I will always value.

Beyond the newsroom, the skills I gained through “Mustangs Ahead” have prepared me for my future. As I plan to pursue a path in Museum Studies and History at Florida State University (FSU), the ability to tell meaningful stories, think critically, and engage an audience will continue to be essential. Journalism has given me a strong foundation that I know will carry into every step of my academic and professional journey.

I cannot thank Tom Honsa, “Mustangs Ahead” adviser and journalism teacher, enough for the constant faith and encouragement he gave me throughout my time as the junior associate and senior editor. Honsa believed in me when I thought no one else would.

Additionally, I have the highest of faith and praise for the upcoming “Mustangs Ahead” team, centered around incoming Senior Editor Olivia Holden. She is one of the most dedicated editors I have met. I have full trust that she will continue guiding the program upwards.

Looking back, I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities, challenges, and growth that came from being part of this program. Mustangs Ahead has shaped not only the kind of student I am, but the kind of person I am becoming. That is something I will never forget.
