Stokely Browne and Colin Hymes—Mustangs Ahead

(Lakewood Ranch, FL) --As the school year comes to an end, Lakewood Ranch High School (LRHS) Advanced Placement (AP) Research students are getting ready for one of their biggest events of the year: the AP Research Showcase. After spending months working on their projects, students will finally have the chance to present what they’ve been researching all year.

In AP Research, taught by LRHS AP Research and chemistry teacher Tammy Harper, students come up with their own research question and spend the year collecting data, analyzing results, and finding a conclusion to answer that research question. After, students put everything together into a large final paper that they submit to AP graders.

The showcase is where all that work comes together, allowing students the opportunity to explain their topics and share what they’ve learned with friends, parents, and classmates.

AP Seminar students, taught by LRHS English teachers Jennifer Grant and Christine Poyner, will also be attending the event. Since AP Seminar is the first step in the AP Capstone program, the showcase gives those students a look at what they can expect if they continue into AP Research next year. It also helps them see how the skills they are learning now connect to bigger, more independent projects.

Grant claimed her favorite part of the showcase is, "seeing all the students able to celebrate themselves and the hard work they put in all year.”

Seminar students will also watch a video created by Research students on what to expect in the future.

Overall, the AP Research Showcase is a chance for students to show off the hard work they have put in all year and for others to see what the AP Capstone program is all about.

The Showcase is scheduled for 6 p.m., May 19 in the LRHS media center.
