Riley Mielak- Mustang Ahead
(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- Lakewood Ranch High School (LRHS) varsity cheer just gained a new head coach, Brooklyn McQuilkin.
McQuilkin is a former LRHS teacher. She taught World Geography in 2020-21 and said she is extremely excited to be back at LRHS.
McQuilkin cheered from ages 5-18. Before coming to LRHS to coach, she coached Sarasota High Schools' cheer team.
One thing McQuilkin loves to say is, “The world needs more cheerleaders.”
She explained, “I mean we need more people who genuinely encouraged others, celebrate their success, and lift people up when they need it most.”

Some goals McQuilkin has for the varsity team this season are building a team that supports others and themselves. She wants them to grow as athletes and people, and to improve their skills.
McQuilkin said, “The biggest thing I want people to know is that cheerleading is about so much more than what you see on the sidelines. We work hard and push ourselves, but we're also building confidence, friendships, leadership, and a strong sense of team. I'm proud of what we're building and excited for people to see what this team is capable of.”
