(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) - Lakewood Ranch High School (LRHS) Mustangs look forward to three-day long Labor Day weekend.

There will be no school on Monday, Sept. 7 for Mustangs or teachers.

Recognized in the United States on the first Monday of September each year, Labor Day was first celebrated as a large protest and parade in New York City in 1882 by labor movements to honor workers and demand eight-hour workdays, better pay, and safer working conditions.

LRHS history teacher Matthew Pascuzzi added that, "The observance of Labor Day can be traced to the efforts and contributions of the Labor union movement and the industrial workers of America."

After immense public pressure and strikes, President Grover Clevland signed a bill to make Labor Day an official national holiday on June 28, 1894.

Pascuzzi continued, "The labor unions convinced our government to set aside a day of rest and respect for the American worker and a national holiday was created."

Today, Mustangs utilize the holiday as a three-day weekend as well which allows them to enjoy the remainder of the beautiful Florida summer weather before fall approaches.

LRHS sophomore Christian Patterson commented that, “The three-day weekend is going to be great to give me a break, and time to myself and do some hobbies of mine like going out on my boat to fish.”
