Charlotte Orsetty – Special to Mustangs Ahead

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) - The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Department at Lakewood Ranch High School (LRHS) recently celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with a cultural gathering that brought students together through one universal tradition: food.

The event provided students with an opportunity to share dishes from their home countries while learning about the diverse cultures represented within the school community.

Students proudly brought traditional foods that reflected their cultural backgrounds and shared them with classmates. Each dish offered more than just a meal; it served as a meaningful way for students to showcase their heritage, traditions, and family customs. The celebration highlighted the importance of embracing and honoring the diverse backgrounds of LRHS students. LRHS ESOL teacher Sandra Holgado helps foster an inclusive environment where students feel valued and supported.

Junior English Language Learner (ELL) student Patricia Basillos shared her appreciation for the event. “Having these gatherings every year gives us the opportunity to share and get to know students with different backgrounds. We enjoy making connections that extend beyond the classroom,” said Basillos.

Another junior ELL student, Valeska Gonzalez, shared “We enjoyed coming together and sharing a special moment with our friends who have become family,” said Gonzalez.

In addition to the cultural celebration, Holgado took the opportunity to provide students with important information about the ESOL program, graduation requirements, and available school and community resources. Her presentation helped ensure that students were informed about the support systems and opportunities available to help them succeed academically and prepare for their future.
