(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) - Lakewood Ranch High School (LRHS) sophomores shared the new academic challenges that come with the transition from freshman year to sophomore year.
With the new school year having just begun, many sophomores at LRHS discovered the increased academic expectations, the rise in rigor with courses, and the demand for greater responsibility.
For many Mustangs freshman year is a period of adjustment that’s filled with adapting to new routines and meeting new people. However, entering sophomore year brings a new set of challenges as students encounter heightened pressure to maintain their grades.
Sophomore Andrew Walfield mentioned, "It has only been a quarter, and I’m already drowning in schoolwork, especially for AP (Advanced Placement) World History.”
Similarly, sophomore Ava Finnegan shared, “I have a lot more challenging coursework accompanied by new extracurriculars to manage. Freshman year aided in preparation for this school year, however.”

As students are enrolled in more advanced classes, more independent studying, critical thinking, and productive balance is often required.
Sophomore Isabella Lawton highlighted the difficulty of balancing schoolwork with advanced classes and extracurriculars.
“It can be stressful, but I’m learning how to better manage my time to prepare myself for the harder classes I’m taking,” she announced.
For some students, the transition has also changed their perspective on academic success.
Sophomore Emery Danko noted, “This year has taught me that success is about learning and being okay with some imperfection.”
Ultimately, the transition from freshman year to sophomore year symbolizes more than just one step closer to graduation; it changes students’ perceptions and builds greater character.
