Origins and Early Community
The school’s name originates from the Village of Palma Sola, a town planned in 1886 by Warburton Warner. The name "Palma Sola" (Spanish for "Lone Palm") refers to a solitary, towering palm tree that once stood on nearby Snead Island, which sailors used as a landmark to guide boats across the Manatee River.
While the original 19th-century village eventually declined, the area transformed into a thriving residential suburb throughout the 20th century, leading to the need for a dedicated local school.
Establishment and Growth
Founded in 1961: The current Palma Sola Elementary School was officially established in 1961 to serve the growing families in the West Bradenton area.
A "Neighborhood" Identity: For over 60 years, the school has been known for its small, community-centric atmosphere. It currently serves approximately 400–450 students from Pre-K through 5th grade.
The "Save Palma Sola" Movement: In early 2023, the school’s historic significance was highlighted when a community-led petition (garnering over 2,500 signatures) successfully advocated against potential district plans to close or repurpose the school, emphasizing how much the local families value its presence in the neighborhood.
The New Era (2025–2026)
The school is currently entering its most significant historical chapter since its founding.
Modernization Project: A major architectural project led by Fleischman, Garcia, Maslowski (FG+M) has been underway to design and build a new, state-of-the-art school building.
2026 Relocation: As of March 2026, the transition is in its final stages. The school community is preparing to move out of the original 1960s-era structures and into the new facility, marking a "fresh start" while maintaining the school's long-standing traditions.
