Language Arts 6:  Students learn several techniques to improve their expository and persuasive writing skills.  Grammar mini lessons are presented, as a strong understanding of grammar translates into solid writing.  Greek and Latin roots are studies in order to create expansive vocabularies.  Reading strategies such as KWL Plus, selective highlighting, and text coding are emphasized, and literature study includes award winning young adult fiction, short stories, plays, and poetry.

Language Arts 6 Advanced:  A more rigorous course offering than the standard class.  The course prepares students for advanced language arts classes in 7th and 8th grade.  Students are held to a higher standard and are asked to produce more formal writing pieces than their standard counterparts.  Writing is expected to be sophisticated and mature, and students will be instructed in additional techniques to achieve this end.  Outside reading in advanced class will be much more demanding, both in terms of the material and the frequency.

Language Arts 7:  Greek and Latin roots are studied in order to create expansive vocabularies.  Literature study includes fiction, nonfiction, short stories, drama, and poetry.  Grammar lessons are presented to help students identify patterns and rules found in the English language.  Techniques and devices are taught to improve their expository and persuasive writing skills.  Literary techniques and devices are used in comprehension and creating of written, oral, and visual communication.  Multimedia tools are used to enhance communication, presentations, and information relevant to the course.

Language Arts 7 Advanced:  This course prepares students for advanced language arts in 8th grade.  These students are held to a higher standard and are expected to produce more formal writing pieces than those in the standard class.  Writing is expected to be more sophisticated and mature.  Students will be instructed in additional techniques and devices to achieve this end.  Outside reading will be much more demanding, both in terms of the material and the frequency.

Language Arts 8:  Curriculum focuses on reading, writing, listening, speaking, and viewing competencies which are integrated throughout students' learning experiences.  Major emphasis is on the implementation of the writing process with both formal and informal writing situations.  Eighth grade students will learn several strategies to improve their expository and persuasive writing skills, which prepare students for Florida Writes.  Eighth graders will study elements of literature, grammar, and vocabulary while reading young adult fiction, nonfiction, short stories, plays, and poetry.

Language Arts 8 Advanced:  A more challenging course, this class is a prerequisite for 9th grade honors.  Unit studies and themes are consistent with the regular eighth grade curriculum, however, the swift pace of the advanced course allows for more in-depth and enriched study.  Advanced students are held to higher expectations in both quantity and quality of their work and they must meet grade point standards in order to remain in class.

Pre-AP English 1 Honors: This is a High School Honors course that is offered to eighth grade students who meet academic requirements and have a teacher recommendation.  Grades will be on the high school transcript. Per the College Board, "Pre-AP English 1 focuses on reading, writing, and language skills that are relevant to students’ current work and essential for students' future to future high school and college coursework. Texts take center stage, preparing students for close, critical reading and analytical writing. The course trains readers to observe small details in a text to arrive at a deeper understanding of the whole. It also trains writers to create complex sentences—building this foundational skill en route to sophisticated, longer-form analyses." Class requirements include extensive outside reading, writing and projects.  Reading may have more mature themes than other middle school classes.  A cumulative exam counts for at least 20% of the semester grade.
