    In this course students read, write about, and discuss various types of literature. Class time is spent on English language skills, including writing, speaking, listening, and view­ing. A reading component addresses all levels of reading and comprehen­sion. Students learn research skills, mechanics, and usage.

     

    Pre-AICE English Language (Course #1001320)

    1.0 Credit – Grade 9

    Prerequisites: B or better in 8th grade Advanced English, teacher recommendation, and/or 4 or better on FAST Reading and Writing.

    This course features enriched experiences in reading, writing, speaking, and listening, and presents advanced techniques for studying major types of literature and nonfiction. Students write compositions for a variety of purposes and audiences, and students learn techniques for speaking and listening in numerous settings. Students refine their research mechanics and usage skills.

     

    English 2 (Course #1001340)

    1.0 credit – Grade 10

    Students read and respond to sever­al kinds of literature from around the world, including prose, poetry, and drama. Along with literature, students also study vocabulary, composition, and reading strategies and exten­sively prepare for the Language Arts portion of FAST Reading and Writ­ing. The study of language includes grammar, mechanics, usage, and the conventions of language with a con­tinued component of research skills.

    1.0 credit – Grade 11

    The purpose of this course is to pro­vide instruction in English language skills. Emphasis is placed on Ameri­can writers and nonfiction passages. Students engage in frequent practice in writing multi-paragraph essays of various types and research on a vari­ety of topics.

     

    English 4 (Course #1001400)

    1.0 credit – Grade 12

    The purpose of this course is to pro­vide instruction in English language skills. Emphasis is placed on British writers and nonfiction passages. Students engage in frequent practice in writing multi-paragraph essays of various types and research on a vari­ety of topics.

     

    Written Communication 1 (Course #ENC 1101)

    1.0 credit

    Prerequisite: Students must qualify for USF Dual Enrollment to take this course.

    This course encompasses grammar and diction review, compo­sition, expository writing, work with both primary and multiple source themes, instruction on the use of the library, and writing the research pa­per, and practice in oral communica­tion. Students are required to submit typed papers in APA and MLA for­mats. They are also required to sub­mit classwork online.

    Prerequisite: Students must qualify for USF Dual Enrollment to take this course.

    Course content continues fo­cus of ENC 1101 and also includes introduction of literature and nonfic­tion. Students are required to submit typed papers in APA and MLA for­mats. They are also required to sub­mit classwork online.

     

    AICE General Paper (Course #1009400)

    1.0 Credit – Grade 9-12

    Prerequisite: Students must have a GPA of 2.0-3.0.

    The purpose of this course is to encourage students to make cross-curricular links, to develop a maturity of thought ap­propriate to students at their level, and to achieve an understanding and usage of the English language. These skills enable them to express arguments, ideas, and opinions in a reflective and academic manner. An awareness of the wider implica­tions of issues enhances the qual­ity of the students’ responses to the questions. The key objective is for students to convey information and/or opinions in a way that is thought­ful, perceptive, and intelligent to the reader.

     

    AICE English Language AS (Course #1001550)

    1.0 Credit – Grade 9-12

    AS level English Language provides learners with the opportunity to study English language and its use in com­munication. This course covers the conventions of a wide range of written textual forms, the linguistic elements and literary features of texts, the sig­nificance of audience in both the design and reception of texts, the ways in which genre, purpose and context contribute to the meaning of texts, and the linguistic el­ements and literary features of texts. 

     

    AICE English Literature 1 AS (Course #1005370)

    1.0 Credit – Grade 10-12

    Prerequisite: English 2 H or English 2 and the approval of the Instructor.

    AS Level English students will study a range of texts in the three main forms: prose, poetry and drama. Set texts are offered from a wide range of different periods and cul­tures. Learners will develop skills of reading and analysis of texts and are encouraged to undertake wider reading to aid understanding of the texts studied. They will learn skills of effective and appropriate com­munication including the ability to discuss the critical context of texts. Content includes language, form, structure, genre, context, style, and interpretation.
