My doctor says my child needs an education plan. What do I do?
The first step is to contact your child's teacher and the MTSS Facilitator at school. If your doctor provided a written report, please share this information with them. School staff will coordinate with you to schedule a meeting to discuss the recommendation and determine if additional information is needed.

I was given rating scales/questionnaires for the school to complete on my child. What do I do?
We can certainly help with that. The first step is to contact the school and ask for a Release of Information form.
The parent/legal guardian must fill out the Release of Information form. You will need to know the requesting doctor's name, practice phone number and address. Then return the completed, signed release to the school along with the rating scale/questionnaire(s).
The teacher will complete their portion, and the school will fax the rating scale/questionnaire(s) directly to the doctor.
The Release of Information will be kept on file and is good for two years.

I want my child to be in the gifted program. What is the first step?
The first step in determining eligibility for the gifted program is to be nominated for a gifted screening. A student may be nominated by a teacher, parent, community member, peer, or by him or herself. Many school counselors have nomination forms, or they can direct you to someone who can assist you in the school.

My child is being bullied at school. What do I do?
Listen to your child and praise them for telling a trusted adult. You or your child can Report Bullying. To expedite your concern, please contact your child's school directly. Each school has a bullying contact and will be able to assist in the investigation. School counselors are available to provide support and strategies for dealing with bullying incidents.

Will my Elementary child be retained if they do not pass the FAST?
Florida requires that all students who do not pass the FAST or other approved assessment in 3rd grade be retained for one year. Low scores on subsequent FAST tests will not generate a retention, but may indicate a need for intensive interventions to be provided.

Who do I contact if I want my child tested for a learning disability?
Each school has an Intensive Support Team (IST), who meet regularly to discuss interventions and additional supports for students who are not meeting academic or behavioral expectations. Please contact your child’s teacher to discuss your concerns or contact your school's front office to connect you with the IST Chair to schedule a meeting.

How do I view my child's grades?
All parents should create a FOCUS account to view grades, attendance, progress reports and report cards in real time.
