The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program provides support in English acquisition, academic success, and social assistance for Manatee County families that have been identified as English language learners (ELLs). A variety of programs are provided to support ELLs in all schools through out the district.
An English Language Learner (ELL) is defined as a student with limited English proficiency, who speaks a language other than English at home (NCELA, 2006). When families enroll a student, they must fill out a home language survey that asks three questions about their home language. A single “yes” answer to any of the questions results in the student being given an English language proficiency test to see if that child is eligible for ESOL services.
