Supporting Language Acquisition at Home
-
Supporting your child in a dual language program, even if you don’t speak the language, is absolutely possible!
Here are some strategies to consider:
Understanding the Process of Language Acquisition
Learning a new language takes time and patience. Initially, your child will start with single words, then move on to simple phrases, and it may take a considerable amount of time before they begin using complete sentences. Avoid making your child repeat words or phrases on command, encourage them to use the new language naturally and in context. Forcing them to perform can embarrass them and hinder their willingness to use the new language.
Teacher Communication
Maintain open communication with your child’s teachers to stay informed about their progress and any areas where extra support may be needed.
Check the child’s backpack each day. Watch for newsletters or other ways the teacher communicates with parents.
Attend workshops or informational sessions offered by the school to learn more about supporting your child’s bilingual education.
Labeling
Label common household items in both languages to reinforce vocabulary.
Flashcards
Use bilingual flashcards to help your child learn new words and concepts.
Daily Practice
Integrate the target language into daily routines, such as counting in the target language, using bilingual calendars, or practicing phrases during mealtime.
Language Apps
Use language-learning apps that offer interactive and engaging activities for children.
Homework Support
While you may not understand the language, you can assist with organizing their homework and ensuring they have the resources they need.
Volunteering
Volunteer at your child’s school or community events to stay involved and connected.
Celebrate Achievements
Celebrate milestones and achievements in both languages to motivate and encourage your child.
TV Shows & Movies
Watch age-appropriate TV shows and movies in the target language.
Music & Podcasts
Listen to music and podcasts in the target language to increase exposure and familiarity.
Cultural Activities
Engage in cultural activities related to the target language, such as cooking traditional foods, attending cultural festivals, or visiting museums.
