Textbook Adoption

  • Pursuant to Florida State Statute and School Board Policy 2520, the adoption of instructional materials must be made available to the parents of public school students and residents of Manatee County 20 calendar days prior to the adoption by the School Board.

    Instructional Materials Process
    • Publishers submit bids to the Florida Department of Education for districts to select and adopt.
    • Publishers prepare print and digital materials to be evaluated by the District Instructional Materials Adoption Committee (School Administrators, Teachers, Parents, and Community Members).
    • Instructional Materials are presented, reviewed, and evaluated by the District Instructional Materials Adoption Committee.
    • Materials are available for in-person review during the at the Professional Support Center, 2501 63rd Avenue E, Bradenton, FL 34203.
    • School site instructional employees complete online voting.
    • District Instructional Materials Adoption Committee makes a final recommendation to the Board.
    • Publishers are reviewed by the Florida Department of Education before purchase and use by the District.

        Objection to District Adoption Core Instructional Materials

         

        1. The parent, as defined by Florida Statutes, of a student enrolled in a School District of Manatee School, or resident of Manatee County, may contest the district school board's adoption of a specific instructional material by filing a petition on the SDMC Library and Instructional Material Objection Form within 30 calendar days after the adoption of the materials by the School Board to object to the materials based on the criteria of s.1006.31(2) or s.1006.40(3)(d). For the 9-12 Personal Financial Literacy and Money Management instructional materials adoption, the objection period is October 30-November 29, 2024.
        2. The SDMC Library and Instructional Material Objection Form must be signed by the parent or resident, include the required contact information, and state the specific objection to the instructional material.
        3. Within 30 days after the thirty-day waiting period, the School Board will conduct at least one open public hearing on all timely petitions received and provide the petitioner written notification of the date and time of the hearing at least 7 days before the hearing.
        4. The School Board’s decision after convening a public hearing is final and not subject to further petition or review.
